The Royal Flush

We are absolutely wagging our tails over here! It was such a blast to sit down with Gabriella Lacombe to talk about the mission behind the app. She just released a fantastic feature on us called "The Royal Flush," which dives into how a high-stakes morning run turned into a global map for anyone who needs to "go" on the go.

The 5:30 A.M. Wake-Up Call

The idea for PortaDash didn’t start in a boardroom; it started on a dark, quiet Richmond street at 5:30 in the morning. If you’re like me and track your miles before the sun comes up, you know that feeling: you’re miles into a great route when an internal "countdown" begins.

That morning, after scanning the horizon and finally finding a porta-potty—only to find it locked—the panic was real. After talking to fellow runners, it became clear that this wasn’t just a personal mishap. Whether it’s a marathoner in training or a parent at a playground with a toddler, we’ve all been there.

More Than Just a Map

While we leverage tech to provide a global map of restrooms, the real heart of the app is the community. Our users are the ones logging the "intel" that actually matters:

  • Cleanliness: A five-star review isn't about being in a fancy hotel; it's about a facility that smells good and is well-maintained.

  • Accessibility: Pinpointing wheelchair-accessible stalls and baby-changing tables.

  • The Details: Knowing if a site is free or if it’s tucked behind a locked gate before you arrive.

Currently, our community is a vibrant mix—about 60% runners and 40% parents—but we’re here for everyone, from gig workers to contractors and delivery drivers.

Destigmatizing the "Potty Talk"

There is a unique vulnerability in needing a bathroom and not being able to find one. By sharing these stories—from the "absolute lifesaver" unit at Mary Munford Elementary to the runner who brought flowers to a shop owner as a thank-you—we are building a sense of camaraderie. We want to move past the embarrassment and lean into the shared human experience.

What’s Next?

The mission continues to be focused on high-energy growth and tech-savvy solutions for the fitness and family communities. Beyond the app, the dream is to eventually compile these bathroom adventures into a book of stories from around the world.

If you’ve found a hidden gem at Libbie Market or a reliable spot at Dogwood Dell, keep those reviews coming. Your crowdsourced intel is literally saving someone’s day!

Stay active, stay hydrated, and—most importantly—stay close to a five-star flush.

Got a story? Have a harrowing or wholesome bathroom adventure to share? Submit it on our website and let’s keep the conversation going!
